Let’s talk reality for a minute. No self-respecting street cop checks in service just hoping to catch a bunch of reports and do a bunch of paperwork. We have psych evals in the hiring process for people like that… But the reality of policing in today’s world is that quality reports not only secure convictions but keep you and your department out of trouble. And like it or not, bean counting for things like NIBRS, Racial Bias, Use of Force, etc. is what helps your admin keep the lights on, and it’s here to stay.
Because we’ve been Patrol Officers, we know that you don’t really care about that stuff. (We sure as hell didn’t.) You became a cop to stand up to criminals and make your community better, not push paper your whole shift. Paperwork might be the lifeblood of your agency, but it still sucks.
